As I sit in the quiet surroundings of the Erasmus Huis Library in Jakarta, I can’t help but think about the importance of public spaces like this one. The library is a beautiful place, filled with books and resources that are available to anyone who wants to use them. It’s a space where people can come to learn, explore, and discover new ideas, all while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere that surrounds them.

But as much as I appreciate the Erasmus Huis Library and the resources it provides, I can’t help but feel like we need more public spaces like this one. Spaces that are accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.

Public spaces like libraries are essential for a number of reasons. For one, they provide a place for people to come together and connect with others in their community. They offer a sense of belonging and a space where people can learn from one another.

In addition, public spaces like libraries offer valuable resources to people who may not have access to them otherwise. For example, many people may not have the funds to purchase books or access to a computer, but they can come to a public library and use those resources for free.

Finally, public spaces like libraries are important for fostering a love of learning and intellectual curiosity. They offer a place where people can explore new ideas and expand their knowledge, regardless of their age or educational background.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget the importance of public spaces like libraries. But as I sit here in the Erasmus Huis Library, surrounded by books and the quiet hum of people reading and studying, I’m reminded of just how valuable these spaces are. We need more public spaces like this one, spaces that are accessible to everyone and offer a sense of community and learning. It’s up to all of us to make sure that these spaces exist and thrive for generations to come.
